The Leela Palace, Jaipur

Polo in the Pink City

The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts recently collaborated with the Rajasthan Polo Club to sponsors The Leela Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Polo Cup 2022. The hotel celebrated this association by hosting a grand weekend of food, music and polo in Jaipur in October.

The grandeur and hospitality of the Leela Palace property took my breath away even as the unpredictable rain literally rained all over their plans. The show went on against all odds and went on fabulously too.

Despite the slippery turf on the Polo grounds, a thrilling show match was played. The Leela Team was led by HRH Maharaja Padmanabh Singh, the Prince of Jaipur and the pomp and pageantry that accompanied the match was something that can only ever be experienced in the land of the Maharajas. There were bedecked elephants, camels and vintage cars, ghoomar dancers and high tea served with champagne under the pink skies.

Truly an affair to remember.

The Leela Palace Delhi also played host for an exclusive sit-down dinner earlier that week. Along with a few other guests I was treated to a preview of  LOUIS XIII’s first full-meal pairing at the Jamavar restaurant at the hotel.

Where France meets Avadh

The Leela Palace Delhi also played host for an exclusive sit-down dinner earlier that week. Along with a few other guests I was treated to a preview of LOUIS XIII’s first full-meal pairing at the Jamavar restaurant at the hotel. Louis XIII (from the house of Remy Martin) is to the world of Cognac what Iranian Beluga Caviar is to the world of food. And Jamavar – the fine dining restaurant at The Leela Palace that pays homage to the royal kitchens of the land is perhaps the finest Avadhi cuisine one can find in the country.

India Mr Malo Le Mestre, LOUIS XIII’s charming ambassador to India hosted the evening along with Chef Shamsher of The Leela Palace and the two of them regaled us with anecdotes of how the dishes came to be.

It took nine months of experimentation between the executive chef of Maison Remy Martin Mr Romuald Feger, and Chef Shamsher Ahmed to create an unforgettable menu that did justice to the finest Cognac there is to be had in the world. Who knew that two contrasting cuisines could come together in such a sublime way and then pair so perfectly with the cognac so fragrant, it lingered within you like a delicious secret.

While everything on the menu was extraordinary the few dishes that stood out for me were Gosht Nalli Nahari, the Guchi Kebab and the unforgettable Nimish Kesar ke Phool that tasted like I’d swallowed a fragrant cloud.
